Block 3 – Pre-production planning

3.36 – Wireframe layouts

Wireframe layouts are a specific pre-production documents that are used to plan the layout of multi-page documents such as websites or interactive multimedia products.

They show the basic layout of each page rather than the detail and are very different from visualisation diagrams.

You might have used a wireframe layout in your portfolio work, especially if you did the R097 Interactive Multimedia unit.

I produced a set of wireframes for a Key Stage 3 project, which might serve as an example of a pretty basic set of documents.

A proper set of wireframes would include a lot more information, especially annotations. These were produced using presentation software for what it's worth.

Structure charts

Structure charts are another type of pre-production document that can be useful to plan the pages of a multi-page product such as a website or interactive multimedia product.

They show how the pages of a product link together and how the different sections are linked.

They won't appear on the exam but can be useful in portfolio units.

Remember, structure charts aren't on the exam. They are useful to know about for your portfolio work however.
