Unit 9 Outline - Development
WARNING! These pages are now very old. They were last updated in 2008 and the content applies to an old version of any geography syllabus currently active in the UK.
I've kept them here because there might be something useful for someone and the general marking principles aren't all that different. But be aware that it's old and out of date (the stuff on the Google Earth page in particular may not work at all)

There are rich contries (MEDCs) and poorer countries (LEDCs) but there are also rich places in poor countries and poor people living in rich countries. This Development Gap causes problems and there are a range of ways we can try to deal with it.
Key Content:
- How we measure development
- Why different parts of the world are richer or poorer and the consequences of this for people
- How we can try to reduce the development gap
Major Case Studies:
- Indicators such as GNP and the HDI must be really well understood
- A TNC (such as Nike)
- Aid Schemes (big ones like the Aswan Dam and small ones like bunds in Burkina Faso)
- Fair Trade Schemes (such as Cafe Direct)
- Appropriate technology ideas (such as bunds or Water Aid schemes in Burkina Faso)
